Recall that Optimism and Wintermute lost 20 million native tokens due to an error in the address. The administration urged the attacker to return what was stolen and threatened to sue.
Soon after, the hacker transferred 1 million tokens to Vitalik Buterin. Today, June 10, the unknown person repeated the transaction, noting in the signature that he “believes in the founder of Ethereum.”
He also asked Buterin what to do with the rest of the money. He recommended that the hacker return what he had stolen. Soon the unknown person apologized to the Optimism administration and promised to transfer the rest.
So far, Buterin had no comment on the transfer of 2 million native tokens of the new DAO to him. However, he is likely to return the money to the founders of the project.
At the time of the theft, Optimis’ 20 million native tokens were valued at $35 million. After the administration’s mistake, the rate dropped. However, 1 million tokens still represents a fairly significant amount – just over $820,000.
