The term “metaverse” first appeared in the book Snow Crash by science fiction writer Neal Stephenson.

Thirty years have passed since the book was published, and the metaverse has become a reality. So Stevenson decided to create his own blockchain. It will be called LAMINA1. Former Bitcoin Foundation president Peter Wessenes is also involved in the project.

“We’re going to make this place as similar to Neil’s vision as possible. And it will privilege developers, creators, and the whole community that supports the metaverse,” Peter Vessenes says in an interview.

He added that the blockchain will be carbon-neutral. The company does not give a launch date, but promises that the wait will not be long.

A vision from a novel

Stevenson’s novel Snow Crash depicts the meta-world as a virtual urban environment. People enter it through a worldwide Internet network and VR glasses. The book also touches on themes of social inequality, totalitarianism, advertising and virtual real estate.

Today Stevenson has different thoughts on the metaverse. He predicts that most of these sites will be created with screens rather than VR headsets in mind.

In 1992, the writer could not have imagined that video game technology would reach such a development. Modern solutions have made 3D graphics cheap, so meta-universes can do quite well with flat screens (without the use of VR glasses).
